Who's Right?

My roommate claims the big bedroom by seniority: is that fair?

A story made up by our editors to get the debate going, not a real account.

My side

In our apartment, there’s one big bedroom with a balcony, and two smaller ones. The person who had the big one moved out. I moved in a year ago, my roommate three years ago. She thinks the room is hers, by seniority. I suggested drawing names, or that whoever takes it pays a little more rent. She feels that’s a way of taking away something she’s earned. I don’t get why two extra years should automatically mean the balcony. We’re now communicating through sticky notes on the fridge.

Their side

My roommate points out that when she moved in, the former roommate promised her the big bedroom as soon as she left. She also waited three years in the smallest room without complaining, and she’s the one who handles the bills and deals with the landlord. According to her, seniority is the usual rule when you share an apartment.
