Who's Right?

My parents lend the lake house to my brother, never to me

A story made up by our editors to get the debate going, not a real account.

My side

My parents have a little house on a lake that they don’t use much anymore. For three summers now, my brother has spent the whole month of July there with his friends. For free. Nobody has ever offered it to me. When I brought it up, my parents looked surprised, like the idea had never crossed their minds. I felt like the forgotten kid. My brother says all I have to do is ask. But I don’t want to ask: I want it offered to me, like it was to him. I think that should go without saying.

Their side

My parents explain that my brother asked for it himself, the very first year, and that he takes care of the house in exchange: mowing, small repairs, cleaning the dock. They didn’t know I was interested. According to them, they’re not choosing one kid over the other: they’re answering whoever asks. They’re ready to lend me the house in August.
