Who's Right?

My mom wants a call every day, I want one a week: who’s right?

My side

Since I moved across the country for work, my mom calls me every day. At 7 p.m. sharp. If I don’t pick up, she calls back at 7:15, then texts me: “Everything okay?” I love her a lot, but honestly, I don’t have much to report every single night. Tuesday, I had pasta. Wednesday too. I finally suggested one call a week, on Sunday, a longer one, to really catch up on our lives. She took it badly. She told me I don’t need her anymore. I just need my evenings.

Their side

My mom explains that these short calls reassure her. Since she retired, her days are quieter, and hearing my voice every night, even for two minutes, does her good. According to her, one call a week is what you do with a distant cousin, not with your own kid. She’s not asking for big conversations, just a good night and proof that I’m okay.
