Arguments: roommates

With roommates, you share the same fridge, the same bathroom and, often, the same arguments. Dishes piling up. The yogurt that vanished. Music late at night. A roommate’s boyfriend who basically lives there without chipping in. The thermostat cranked to 75 °F by one person and turned down to 64 °F by the other every time they walk by.

These arguments turn into misunderstandings fast because nobody’s really at home, and everybody kind of is. The rules are rarely said out loud. Everyone shows up with their own habits, which they think are normal. Then the irritation builds up in silence, until the famous passive-aggressive note taped to the fridge.

To vote fairly, first look for a shared rule everyone agreed on. Without a rule, it’s hard to blame someone for not following it. Read both sides, knowing the same person wrote them. Then separate the substance from the way it was handled. You can be right about the dishes, and wrong to dump the pile of dirty plates on your roommate’s bed. If everyone let things slide, “Everyone’s wrong” is an answer too.

FAQ

How do roommates split chores without fighting?

A written chore chart, agreed on together, prevents the “I do more than you” fights. Split by task rather than by room if your schedules are very different. And plan to revisit it now and then, because a chart that’s perfect at first rarely is a few months later.

A roommate’s boyfriend or girlfriend practically lives with us: what do we do?

Bring it up early, before the irritation sets in. Stick to concrete facts: the bathroom, the noise, the groceries, the bills. Suggest a clear rule, for example a number of nights per week or chipping in on groceries.

Can you help yourself to food in the shared fridge?

Only if you’ve agreed on it. The easiest thing is to separate what’s shared, like salt, oil or coffee, from what’s personal, with a shelf each. If you borrow something, giving a heads-up and replacing it solves almost everything.
