Who's Right?

Our baby has the same name as my friend’s dog: is that a problem?

My side

My partner and I picked a name for our baby. A soft, slightly old-fashioned name we’ve loved for years, long before we ever met the dog in question. Because yes: my best friend has a golden retriever with that exact name. When we announced it at dinner, she burst out laughing, then saw we were serious. She told us she found it weird, that people would mix them up at the park, and that her dog wouldn’t know when she was calling him. She’s not mad, but she brings it up every single time. I think a name doesn’t belong to anyone, least of all a dog.

Their side

My friend explains that she picked that name for her dog seven years ago, and our whole group knows him by it. She’s afraid our two families will run into each other at the park and the jokes will never end. She isn’t forbidding anything, but she would have liked us to talk about it before the announcement, since we obviously knew her dog.
