“No kids” wedding, except the cousin’s: we left early

My side

We were invited to a friend’s wedding, with “adults only” on the invitation. We have two little ones. We found a babysitter for the whole evening, which cost us a lot and took a ton of planning. When we arrived, surprise: the bride’s cousin was there with her three kids, running between the tables. It really got to me. During dinner, I made a comment to the bride, saying that if we’d known, we would have brought ours. Then we left before the cake cutting, a little hurt. She texted me the next day that we’d ruined part of her night.

Their side

The bride explains that her cousin came from very far away and had no childcare option there. She made a last-minute exception, without time to let everyone know. She understands our surprise, but she feels that complaining in the middle of dinner, on her wedding day, then leaving before the cake, was making her pay for a tough decision.
