My side

I moved out of my parents’ house eight years ago. But my teenage bedroom had stayed exactly the same: the posters, the twin bed, the swim team medals. It was my safe place when I came home for the holidays. On my last visit, surprise: there’s a treadmill, a stationary bike and a giant mirror. My stuff is in boxes in the garage. Nobody warned me. Now I sleep on the pullout in the office, between the printer and the ironing board. I felt erased from the house. I sulked all weekend, and my parents don’t get why.

Their side

My parents say they told me about the project several times on the phone, and I answered “yeah, yeah.” The room sat empty eleven months a year. They’re in their sixties, they want to stay in shape, and they took care to pack my things carefully. According to them, my place in the family doesn’t depend on a twin bed and three posters.
