Who's Right?

My neighbor blasts EDM, so I fired back with polka: who’s wrong?

A story made up by our editors to get the debate going, not a real account.

My side

My downstairs neighbor plays electronic music every Saturday afternoon. Loud enough to make the glasses rattle in my cabinet. I went down to talk to him once: he turned it down a little, then cranked it back up the next Saturday. So I fought back. I dug out an old polka accordion album of my grandpa’s and blasted it on my speaker, set on the floor, facing down. Polka versus EDM, every Saturday. My girlfriend ended up spending her weekends at her sister’s. My neighbor left me a note: “Your accordion is unbearable.” I thought that took some nerve.

Their side

My neighbor explains that Saturday afternoon is his only time to unwind, and that he never plays music at night. He’d turned it down after my visit, and he thought that was enough. According to him, putting a speaker face down on the floor to blast accordion music on purpose is a provocation, not a conversation.
