My friend is upset I won’t share her candles on Instagram

A story made up by our editors to get the debate going, not a real account.

My side

A friend just started her own little business selling handmade scented candles. I’m thrilled for her. I ordered four for the holidays and gave them as gifts. But she’d also like me to like, comment on and share every one of her posts, three or four a day. I barely use Instagram, and I don’t want to turn my account into a storefront. She sent me a slightly cold message: “You know, a share doesn’t cost anything, and it helps me so much. The others do it.” I feel like I’m being cast as a bad friend, when I’m one of her best customers.

Their side

My friend explains that for a small business, visibility on social media is vital, and posts that get quick reactions get shown to more people. A share takes three seconds, while an ad would cost her a lot. She isn’t asking for everything, just a story every now and then, like her other friends do.
