Who's Right?

My boyfriend wants a second cat, I don’t: who should give in?

A story made up by our editors to get the debate going, not a real account.

My side

We have a cat. He’s eight, and he’s perfect. He sleeps, he eats, he judges everyone from the top of the dresser. My boyfriend dreams of a second cat. He sends me photos of kittens up for adoption several times a day, with texts like “look at his little paws.” I keep saying no. Our apartment is barely 500 square feet, we’re away a lot of weekends, and our cat already hates the neighbors’ cat, through the window. I’m scared living together would turn into a disaster. He thinks I’m a buzzkill. I think you don’t get an animal on a whim.

Their side

He thinks our cat is bored alone all day and that a buddy would do him good. He read that a lot of cats adjust really well to a newcomer if you introduce them slowly. He’s offering to handle everything: litter box, food, vet visits. According to him, we keep waiting for the right moment, and the right moment never comes.
