My best man speech upset the groom: but it was funny!

My side

My best friend picked me as his best man. For the speech, all he said was: “Make me laugh, but keep it short.” I wrote five minutes of memories, including the story of his driver’s test, which he failed four times, once because he stalled in the middle of an intersection, then honked to apologize to the examiner. The whole room laughed, the bride included. The groom smiled through his teeth. Later that night, he called me out, in front of several guests, for telling that story in front of his new father-in-law, who is a driving instructor. I didn’t know. He walked off to dance without finishing the conversation.

Their side

The groom explains that he asked me to make him laugh, not to make a fool of him in front of in-laws he barely knows yet. He had never told that story, and he’s always been a little ashamed of it. For him, a best man runs his speech by the groom, or at least asks if there are topics to avoid. He admits he picked a bad moment to tell me.
