My side
My best friend asked me to be her maid of honor. I said yes, crying happy tears. Then her sister, the other maid of honor, pitched the bachelorette party: a weekend in Cancun, flights, spa and activities, about $900 a person. I said honestly that it was beyond my budget, and that other girls in the group were in the same boat. I pitched another idea: a surprise day close to home, with a scavenger hunt built on our memories and a fancy picnic. The sister accused me of “ruining the bachelorette” and of not being committed. The bride knows nothing: it’s supposed to be a surprise.
Their side
The bride’s sister explains that her sister has always dreamed of a trip abroad with her friends, and that she knows her tastes better than anyone. She spent weeks hunting for cheap flights. According to her, a bachelorette gets planned far in advance, and you can save up over a few months. She thinks it’s a shame for a maid of honor to put on the brakes instead of looking for solutions.
