Who's Right?

I posted her engagement on my story before she could: big mistake?

A story made up by our editors to get the debate going, not a real account.

My side

At brunch, my best friend showed us her ring: her boyfriend had just proposed. We screamed, we cried, it was wonderful. I took a picture of her hand with the ring, and an hour later I posted it on my story with “Congrats to the future Mr. and Mrs.!” and a bunch of hearts. No name, no face. But her mom saw the story before she could call her, and one of her aunts commented in the family group chat. My friend called me in tears: she wanted to tell her family herself, at her own pace. I deleted the story, but I feel she could have warned me it was a secret.

Their side

My friend explains that she had just gotten engaged that morning, and hadn’t told her parents anything yet. For her, news like that goes to family first, by phone, and that seemed obvious. She blames me for not asking before posting, not even a quick question, when she was sitting right next to me.
