I’m a student and gave $40 to the honeymoon fund: too little?

My side
A childhood friend is getting married, and I was really touched to be invited. The couple set up a honeymoon fund, with a line on the invitation: “For reference, guests usually contribute around $150.” I’m a student, I work weekends at a coffee shop, and I’d already paid for the flight and the outfit. I gave $40, with a long handwritten card and an album of our childhood photos that took me entire evenings to put together. At the wedding, the maid of honor leaned over: “Oh, so you’re the $40?” She could see the amounts. I spent the whole night feeling tiny.
Their side
The maid of honor explains that she saw the amounts because she was managing the fund, and that her comment was just a question, not a dig. She feels the $150 mention was there to guide guests, not to require anything. But she thinks that with the cost of dinner per guest, such a low contribution deserved a little note of explanation to the couple.
