Who's Right?

I liked the store-bought pie better than my mother-in-law’s

My side

Every Thanksgiving, my mother-in-law makes her homemade pumpkin pie. It’s her pride and joy. This year, she served two pies: hers, and one from the grocery store, “to compare.” She asked everyone for their honest opinion. Everyone said hers was better. I wanted to be honest. I said I preferred the store-bought one, because it was lighter. Dead silence. My husband shot me a look. My mother-in-law smiled, but she served me tiny slices of dessert for the rest of the holiday weekend. She asked for an honest opinion, didn’t she?

Their side

According to my mother-in-law, when you ask for an opinion at the table, in front of the whole family, you expect a little tact. She spent two days on that pie. She would have taken criticism in private, something like “a little less spice next time.” My husband adds that the taste test was mostly a game, and everyone got that except me.
