Who's Right?

I left the family group chat and now my aunt is hurt

A story made up by our editors to get the debate going, not a real account.

My side

My family group chat has twenty-three people in it. Every morning, my aunt posts a “Have a blessed day” image with sparkly flowers. Then come the animal videos, the jokes, the food photos, and the debates about what time Sunday dinner starts. Eighty messages a day, sometimes more. My phone was buzzing in the middle of meetings. One day, I left the group, quietly. Well, as quietly as possible: the app shows “left the conversation” for everyone. My aunt called me, hurt, asking what she had done to me. I told her I could still be reached directly. She says it’s not the same.

Their side

My aunt explains that this group is the only daily link with the far-flung family, and that her morning images are her way of saying she’s thinking of everyone. She points out that you can mute a conversation without leaving it, and read it whenever you want. For her, seeing “left the conversation” in front of everyone is like slamming the door at a family dinner.
