Who's Right?

His wedding falls during my long-planned trip: do I cancel?

My side

For a year, my partner and I have been planning our big trip: a three-week road trip across Canada, flights and rentals booked, time off approved, almost nothing refundable. A few months before we leave, a close friend announces his wedding... right in the middle of our vacation. I explained the situation as soon as I got the invitation, apologizing, and offered to celebrate with them before we leave, over dinner. He said he understood. But I heard from another friend that he was really disappointed, that he was counting on me for a toast, and that he thinks a trip “can be moved.” I don’t know what to do anymore.

Their side

My friend explains that he didn’t pick the date at random: it was the only one available at the venue, and he didn’t know about our plans. You only get married once, while a trip can be moved, even with fees. He isn’t mad at me, but he was hoping I’d at least look into leaving a few days later.
